January 8, 2005
Dr. Dave and Evil Steve remember childhood air-raid drills in Hawaii before explaining why every technology choice has drawbacks and why responsible security advice requires continuing judgment. Looking at the Consumer Electronics Show, they trace television’s return through flat displays, digital recording, broadband and device convergence, while Dr. Dave warns against becoming an involuntary beta tester and focuses on making technology useful today. Caller Will’s new computer leads to a reflection on using technology to support work and life rather than letting it take over, while Apple’s ThinkSecret lawsuits, the effort required to prepare a company laptop, an electronics store using handwritten receipts and Microsoft’s new anti-spyware beta place the show firmly in early 2005.
