August 20, 2005
After a difficult week restoring networks affected by the Zotob worm, Dr. Dave compares his work with an emergency room for high technology and says preventive maintenance costs less than living from crisis to crisis. He credits experience rather than brilliance for his ability to solve problems, argues that simple software people actually use can outperform bloated products and reminds small businesses that securing client information is an obligation rather than a convenience. A careful two part response to caller James shows Dr. Dave researching an unfamiliar website, refusing to make an unsupported accusation, documenting and disputing unauthorized charges and defending the principle that people still own their personal computers after installing software. The lighter and historical moments include the smell of football season, a caller explaining why he hurried Dr. Dave, a warning that more megapixels do not guarantee a better camera and an early case in which virtual goods stolen by a software bot were exchanged for real money.
