January 7, 2006
In the first show of 2006, a discussion of music and race leads Dr. Dave to remember his childhood friend Marcellus and the two boys wondering why adults treated their friendship as extraordinary. Dr. Dave also recounts Computer Talk beginning to syndicate itself and the nearly yearlong telephone billing ordeal that followed the show’s new independence. Calls produce two durable consulting lessons: backup effort should match the importance of the data, and the choice to attempt a repair depends on a person’s patience, experience and consequences if it fails. Against the week’s CES hype, Dr. Dave and Evil Steve examine telephone companies defending their territory against Internet calls, laugh at a Windows powered gas pump, challenge emotional loyalty to technology brands and leave a time capsule of their predictions for 2006.
