The week Apple announces the iPhone, Dr. Dave praises its design and potential while insisting that a polished keynote cannot answer questions about real performance, service cost, durability or whether the details will work outside the demonstration. Away from the launch, he describes locating original 1970s paint chips for his restored Mazda, watching hundreds of fountain pens and drawing on experience teaching Lotus in the 1980s to keep a client’s twenty-one-year-old system printing. That difficult job leads to a larger philosophy: do not chase a feature merely because a salesperson or friend names it, use technology to finish useful work and then go experience life. The show also preserves the Wii overtaking PlayStation 3 in early sales, PayPal’s key-fob authentication, AT&T rebuilding the pieces separated decades earlier, Shaun Alexander’s focus on being a better teammate and husband, and callers helping Dr. Dave improve his own troubleshooting.
