A broken link on DaveMason.com gives Dr. Dave and Evil Steve a chance to admit plainly that they are their own webmasters, while a coming operating-system report leads Dr. Dave to say that telling the truth and seeing reality matter even when people become angry. The show remembers FORTRAN pioneer John Backus, reports an early ransomware case encountered by one of Dr. Dave's data-recovery peers and explains why a backup routine must be simple enough that people will actually keep doing it. A caller catches Dr. Dave criticizing Norton when the question was really about ZoneAlarm, producing a self-deprecating exchange about never letting the possibility of being wrong keep him quiet. Near the end, Dr. Dave appreciates a listener who says the show makes computer security understandable and recalls how a friendly software developer added a quick-reply feature only two days after Dr. Dave suggested it.
