March 15, 2008

The March 15 show offers a miniature portrait of how Dr. Dave thought and worked. An auto-shop monitor that failed whenever a distant compressor ran looked like a difficult computer problem until Dr. Dave stood in the doorway, noticed a hidden electrical panel four inches behind it and solved months of trouble by sliding the monitor four inches across the desk. A family recollection catches the daily cost of being the expert: after a day of fixing computers, he would arrive home to two boys announcing that Opera, the printer or something else was broken. When Evil Steve says one explanation sounds like meaningless pings and pops, Dr. Dave accepts the criticism because he genuinely wants to translate technology rather than hide behind geek speak. The brothers also capture Dr. Dave's widening musical tastes through their disbelief that he loved a Blake Shelton concert, while a caller gives him the chance to explain that curiosity is valuable but ordinary users should not spend months diagnosing a problem when a safe route forward is already available.
