April 5, 2008
The April 5 show repeatedly returns to one of Dr. Dave's most important professional beliefs: the technically possible answer is not always the responsible answer for the person asking. A caller who has already made several changes lets him explain why troubleshooting one variable at a time matters, and why advice that helps an expert may make a beginner's problem worse. Another repair question prompts a memorable description of controlled force: computer components can demand surprising strength even though the line between success and permanent damage is hard to see. During a long interview about Palm's evolution, Dr. Dave focuses on protecting people's investment in the software around which they have built parts of their lives, while imagining the phone becoming a single connected device that can anticipate needs—including directing him to the nearest fountain-pen dealer. Later he tells listeners that honestly admitting beginner status is smart, not embarrassing, and surprises Evil Steve by calling Apple's MacBook Pro the best Windows XP laptop available. The closing banter brings Dr. Dave's fountain-pen auctions and Evil Steve's Ultraman collection into the studio.
