May 3, 2008

The May 3 show begins with classic live-radio self-awareness: Dr. Dave and Evil Steve made it through traffic, relaxed because they had arrived on time and then remembered they still had to prepare the national hookup. That quickly becomes a serious statement of values. Because callers are also listeners and listeners are the reason the show exists, the brothers insist that the person answering the telephone treat them with respect rather than wielding access as power. A remote-support question lets Dr. Dave explain why he continues doing hands-on computer work every day: without keeping his hands dirty, he would not know what he was talking about on Saturday. Approaching Mother's Day, the brothers say that gifts are fine but a mother would rather have her child sitting with her in person. Later Dr. Dave says he has no vendor axe to grind and will criticize Microsoft or Apple according to what he sees, while a former support worker helps him give a more balanced account of bad technical support—beginners can be difficult to guide, but rushed and undertrained workers are often being asked to solve impossible problems in seconds.
