July 5, 2008
The July 5 show continues the Fourth of July celebration after Dr. Dave and Evil Steve meet listeners at Tucson's Loft Theater and watch Patton, a movie both brothers remember seeing as children. Dr. Dave says he becomes an amateur historian by learning everything he can about a subject, and he explains why the brothers refuse to skip a Saturday broadcast even when friends and family urge them to take the weekend off: it is their show and the listeners expect it live. Several calls reveal his consulting method in unusually clear form—ask enough questions to avoid a premature answer, confirm a diagnosis before spending money piecemeal, set an honest budget and admit when a product has not been personally tested. He also says the show must tell the truth when Microsoft does something right as well as when it does something wrong, and warmly remembers longtime KGOE affiliate Tom as someone whose energy never disappears.
