September 13, 2008

The September 13 show introduces SoldierCentric, a project Dr. Dave and Evil Steve describe as dear to their hearts. Frustrated that they could not do enough directly for service members, they built a public beta with blogs, history and memorial pages, then asked military members themselves to shape its look, feel and content so that their work could be described from the ground rather than through distant media. The rest of the episode repeatedly demonstrates Dr. Dave's method: resist the pressure to report before facts arrive, admit when a twenty-five-step repair cannot be handled responsibly on radio, recognize when a hundred-hour struggle should end and treat a bad support agent's customer with courtesy because the agent did not create the problem. He also praises blogs for their messy but revolutionary free flow of information, explains how fear drives social engineering and argues that even where users bear responsibility, a company cannot blame them for a product that produces more trouble than its predecessor.
