September 27, 2008

The September 27 show opens with a compact statement of purpose: Computer Talk is a hype-free zone meant to identify technology that adds to a person's life instead of subtracting from it. In the middle of the 2008 financial crisis, Dr. Dave acknowledges real fear but refuses to let it become paralysis. His consulting method appears in two revealing exchanges: the wrong technical vocabulary cannot be allowed to produce the wrong diagnosis, and a legitimate software company undermines its own credibility when its license-audit request uses the same intimidation tactics as an attacker. The second hour looks forward—radio must adapt to the Internet rather than lobby away the future; storage is moving from spinning media to solid state; the memristor may represent genuine change rather than product fluff; and improved access to digital audio can matter even more to blind listeners than to sighted ones.
