The iPhone 4 antenna controversy gives Dr. Dave and Evil Steve a vivid example of brilliant technology compromised when designers forget the human being who must hold it. A faulty Palm Pre battery leads Dr. Dave to revise an initially harsh judgment after investigating the physical part, while a lower Kindle price captures another major transition in personal technology. The most personal lesson comes from Dr. Dave’s blog: much of what looks like expertise is his willingness to stay with a problem through frustration until he understands the real cause. He applies the same honesty to security and product recommendations, arguing that protection should fit the actual risk and that facts still matter when they force him to praise a product he did not expect to like.
