January 8, 2011
The first Computer Talk of 2011 begins with Dr. Dave admitting that he simply needed New Year’s Day off, then joking that until the good Lord takes him he is invincible. Looking at the Consumer Electronics Show, he accepts responsibility for his own skepticism and says the hard work is filtering the flood of hype for the small number of ideas that could genuinely change communication and daily life. He and Evil Steve promise new show promotions after using the old ones since 2001, declaring that they change once every decade whether they need to or not. A hands-on family iPad experience gives Dr. Dave a balanced early reaction: the device is unusually compelling to touch and use, but its value still depends on the individual and what that person actually wants to carry and accomplish.
