February 19, 2011
A lively February show begins with birds carrying through the bunker vents and Dr. Dave reflecting that a broadcaster is never quite as good or as bad as he imagines after an unfamiliar program. Two consulting stories reveal his working method: be honest about how much responsibility comes with helping a friend, and when repeated tests contradict the obvious answer, stop flailing and think. Caller John looks ahead to conversational and motion-based computers that might assist older adults and disabled veterans, years before such interfaces became ordinary. The show also records the brothers laughing when their carefully tested phone-system improvement fails on a real call, Dr. Dave’s satisfaction after overcoming an extreme radio-frequency installation, and HP’s reversal of a promised WebOS upgrade.
