April 9, 2011

A failed RAID and two years of unreadable tapes give Dr. Dave a painful but enduring lesson: a backup is only useful if someone has proved that it can be restored, and every single method should be expected to fail eventually. A small-business interview connects dependable, easy-to-use technology with something more important than productivity—time with family—and Dr. Dave says that time is the single component of life. Elsewhere, he treats encryption as a responsibility owed to clients whose information has been entrusted to a professional and records how quickly processors and Windows were changing in 2011. A tour of famous failed computers becomes personal when Dr. Dave remembers that Steve Jobs would not accept an interview unless the questions were limited to NeXT.
