March 2, 2013

The March 2, 2013 broadcast contains one of Dr. Dave's clearest statements about living deliberately with technology. Remembering that he reached for his phone without thinking during a frustrating football game, he argues that people should control their devices rather than respond automatically, experience the physical world with all their senses and be where they are. The same empathy appears in his account of a brilliant eighty-six-year-old client receiving instructions written as though every customer should understand email ports: technology companies should acknowledge when a task is not for a novice and offer trusted help instead of making people feel stupid. Dr. Dave also reflects on why a technical expert must remain a real user to stay relevant, reduces the idea to his phrase live on purpose and explains that private information cannot simply be retrieved once it leaks. Evil Steve's invention of a football player called Pacer Stack Train provides the show's most memorable comic break.
